Use Microsoft Copilot to Build Risk Presentations

Tool:Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint
AI Feature:Create presentation / Add a slide

Difficulty:Beginner
Microsoft Copilot

What This Does

Copilot in PowerPoint generates structured slide decks from your risk findings — so you start with a complete presentation structure rather than a blank file, then spend your time refining and adding your specific data.

Before You Start

  • You have PowerPoint open (desktop or web at powerpoint.microsoft.com)
  • You're signed in with a Microsoft 365 account that includes Copilot
  • You have your risk findings or report document ready to reference

Steps

1. Open a new presentation and find Copilot

Open PowerPoint and create a new blank presentation. In the Home ribbon, click Copilot (the spark icon on the right side). The Copilot panel opens on the right.

2. Create the presentation structure

In the Copilot panel, type a detailed description of the deck you need:

  • "Create a 10-slide risk committee update presentation covering: (1) executive risk overview, (2) credit risk metrics, (3) operational risk incidents this quarter, (4) key control gaps, (5) regulatory update, (6) recommended board actions."

Copilot will generate a full slide deck with a title, layout, and placeholder text for each section.

3. Add or refine individual slides

For any slide that needs specific content, click that slide, then use Copilot to refine it:

  • Click on the credit risk slide
  • In the Copilot panel: "Add a slide about our Q1 credit risk trends. Key points: NPL ratio increased from 1.8% to 2.1%, concentrated in commercial real estate, 3 new watch credits identified."

4. Review and add your data

Replace placeholder text with your actual metrics and findings. Copilot builds the structure and narrative flow — you supply the accurate numbers.

Real Example

Scenario: You need to prepare a board risk committee update for tomorrow's meeting and you have 90 minutes.

What you type: "Create a 12-slide board risk committee presentation for a regional bank. Include: risk landscape overview, top 3 emerging risks, credit risk dashboard, operational risk incidents, cyber risk posture, third-party risk status, regulatory update, and board-level recommendations."

What you get: A complete 12-slide deck with a logical narrative structure — you fill in the actual metrics and remove any slides that aren't relevant.

Tips

  • Give Copilot a specific slide count target — it tends to generate the right amount rather than padding when given a number
  • Use Copilot's "Add a slide" feature for individual sections rather than regenerating the whole deck — it preserves edits you've already made
  • After generating the structure, ask Copilot to "rewrite the speaker notes for the credit risk slide to explain why the NPL increase is concerning" — it will draft your talking points
